Archaeological Excavation

Tenterden Town Council has been informed that No 16 High Street, a few doors up from the Town Hall and adjacent to the Vicarage garden at the back (pictured below) has recently been purchased. In time, the idea is to turn the back garden, approximately one acre, into a community garden.

Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) will be carrying out an archaeological excavation to explore the site’s history and they are looking for volunteers from the local community to help. The excavation will start on Saturday 19th September 2020 until the 27th September 2020. These opportunities do not come up very often, so it is a unique opportunity to learn about Tenterden’s history.

The intention is to be on site every day except Wednesday 23rd, which will be a rest day. Working hours for volunteers will be from 10am to 5pm. Professional archaeologists from CAT will supervise at all times, and anyone taking part in the project will be covered by the Trust’s insurance. A full health and safety statement with risk assessment, which will include measures to prevent the transmission of Covid19, will be circulated to participants in advance, along with full information on the project. Equipment will be provided; those attending will need to wear sensible clothes and footwear. No previous archaeological experience is necessary, and guidance and training will be provided by the professionals on site. Booking is essential and places are  allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t delay in getting in touch. Those wishing to take part should contact Annie Partridge at annie.partridge@canterburytrust.co.uk, providing their name and contact details and an indication of which days they will be available to volunteer.

Access to the site will have to be carefully controlled to ensure social distancing, but CAT do intend to run site tours whilst the excavation is in progress. To express interest in a tour you will need to present yourself to a member of the CAT staff or volunteer who will be able to assist.
