Council Members

Tenterden Town Council consists of 16 members. The whole of Tenterden Town Council stands for election on a four-yearly basis. The last election was on 5 May 2011.

Welcome!
Tenterden Town Council is the local council responsible for the town of Tenterden.

The Town Council serves as the main link between the people of Tenterden and the district authority, Ashford Borough Council. The Town Council’s central role is to act in the interest of the whole community by making decisions and recommendations to improve quality of life and the environment. Consulting and listening to the residents to understand their needs, their wishes and their concerns is an essential aspect of the Council’s work often working in partnership with other organisations, including the voluntary and community sector.

The 16 Town Councillors are unpaid local people, elected by the local people. These volunteers put themselves forward for election to represent the community and give their time freely and willingly for the benefit of the whole town. To contact your local member click here.

Tenterden is divided into four wards:
St Michaels; Tenterden South; Tenterden North; Rolvenden and Tenterden West. Click here to find out which Ward you are in.

Tenterden Town Council is a member of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports, the town being a limb of Rye, which is a head port. For more information on the Cinque Ports and the history of Tenterden click here.

Town Council responsibilities

The Town Council is responsible for the Recreation Grounds in Tenterden and St. Michaels, including the football pitches and play areas. The Town Council also has a consultation role for a variety of matters related to Highways and planning issues, and meets on a fortnightly basis to consider its recommendations regarding planning applications in Tenterden. These applications are then discussed by Ashford Borough Council, which makes the final decision.

The Town Council is also responsible for the Town’s Public Buildings such as ‘The Pebbles’ (which used to contain the Library and is now the home of the retail store ‘White Stuff’), the Pavilion on Tenterden Recreation Ground, the public toilets in Tenterden and St. Michaels, as well as the Town Hall itself.

In the Town Hall is the Mayors Parlour, which is licensed for the conduct of wedding, civil partnership, renewal of vows and baby naming ceremonies, and can accommodate up to forty-four guests. The Town Hall is also home to the Assembly Room, which can accommodate up to 150 people at a function, and from April 2013 will also be licensed for ceremonies. Both of these venues are available for hire. Please click here for more information about holding a ceremony at the Town Hall, and click here to find out about hiring a Town Council facility.
